2019

Teresa Lawton 2019
My paintings are invented from my dreams and observations all mixed up together. I have an endless curiosity about the landscape and nature, I walk every day and I never tier of the countryside. With paint I can create my version of what bits and pieces I see and put them together. Often my work is abstracted to an extreme, I experiment by working up the surface of my canvas with layers of oil paint which can make for either a dark intense painting or I can lighten my pallet up creating shapes and shadows within clear and open space.
Early on this year the hills, fields, forests and woodlands looked so beautiful that I felt I wanted to open the work up and have more narrative, to delve into the landscape a bit more and pick it apart. I work instinctively, often inventing as I go, so I don’t set myself any boundaries. The trees have been a great source of inspiration and I have brought them into my work in stark stylised shapes. Walking is a good start to my working day, it gives me a structure to start from. My thoughts each day will set the mood of the painting. This years paintings are very still and quiet, honed down and minimal at times.
